What are Barcelona going to do with Coutinho?

Philippe Coutinho has struggled to establish himself at Barcelona since his arrival in 2018 and is still far from being a first-team regular. This is in spite of the fact that he is now fully recovered from his injury and that Ronald Koeman views him as a key player.

It is expected that Coutinho will be eased back into proceedings over the coming weeks, but there is reportedly a clause that means if he plays 100 matches for Barcelona then his current club have to pay Liverpool an extra 20 million euros.

He has made 90 appearances for the Blaugrana, so he is close to that reported figure, but Barcelona cannot afford to pay this sort of figure to Liverpool given their precarious financial situation.

It has never been fully confirmed if that clause does exist, but what is certain is that Coutinho's contract at the Camp Nou runs until 2023 and the club tried to sell him this summer. Yet they were unable to secure his departure due to other clubs being unwilling to match his enormous salary.

When Coutinho arrived at Barcelona, he put pen to paper on a contract worth 13.5m euros net per season, but, with such a contract at the age of 29, his departure this summer became impossible.

We'll have to wait to see how Koeman deals with this situation and how often the Dutch coach uses the Brazilian.
